Decided to post this(finally)...for the folks not familiar with the area, as I was. Wish there were more trip reports for hikes done in Maine.
Attempted this on February 19th after looking @ others reports and Mohamed's description. I expected it to be an easy mountain with old roads to follow. As it turned out, in the winter, snowmobiles use all these "roads" so it should just be a matter of following the correct one...I thought.
Mohamed's directions were great and I was on all packed snowmobile trails which I followed to the saddle between Redington and South Crocker...just where I wanted to be(I thought) ...but there was no road heading left up Redington!? Looked all around and started to bushwhack a couple times but wasn't in the proper mindset and just backtracked
Two weeks later I was back. Donna was doing the Rangeley XC Ski Marathon and I would go back and do the bushwhack up Redington! Actually did the Crockers on that Saturday(in a snow storm), during the Ski race, and Redington on Sunday which turned out to be a Beautiful Day!!!
Again I was able to drive 3.3 miles in the Caribou Pond Road(CVR). When I got there yesterday there were 2 vehicles from Maine parked there. Started the longish "road" walk and as I got closer to the Saddle I noticed a snowshoe trail going to the left of the track(N45 01.342 W70 22.482 3280'). It looked recently made and seemed to head in the right direction so started to follow it. Definitely heading the proper way It was quite narrow between the young evergreens. A ways up there was a right hand turn, which seemed to have had more traffic, so right I went. It went up and slowly circled left then straight up to the summit! There was a clearing, some kind of metal pole laying there and the cannister on the back side of a tree on the north side of the clearing After signing the register I noticed 4 folks had been here yesterday ...thanks for showing me the way!!!
This puts me @ 66 of NEHH in winter solo...quite a rush for sure!
Had great views of Spaulding, Abraham and Sugarloaf on the way back...Neat Abraham looked most impressive with the top half mile or so above tree line covered in white! Sooo pretty!!!
Got back to my car @ 3:25. Headed to Kingfield. Followed directions in Maine Mtn Guide off Rte 16/27. Was able to drive in 6 miles, last 2+ on roads used by snowmobiles...will try Abraham tomorrow ...but that's another story...
