10/25/09 - Took Shaw Trail to Black Snout trail and beyond for summit of both Mt. Shaw and Black Snout. After the heavy rains of 10/24, the trail was wet on the middle third, and the brook crossings, (not normally a problem) were a bit of a challenge. Significant portions of the middle third of the Shaw trail ran high with water, but you can work around it. Wear decent boots. I had to be a bit cautious because the rain also brought down a fresh crop of leaves which obscured the rocks, roots and mud of the trail - more of a concern on the way down than the way up.
This was a wonderful day to do these mountains. The forest was alive with yellow color, and I only ran into 2 people after the waterfall located on the first half mile. The views were exquisite...and the sun was warm. If you have done these, you know that the Black Snout and High Ridge trails to summits are really old carriage trails, and both were dry and pleasant.
