Mt. Starr King, Mt. Waumbek via Starr King Trail
Date of Hike: Friday, February 6, 2009
Trail Conditions: Packed powder, feathers
Special Equipment Required: None to Starr King, snowshoes a good idea to Waumbek
Comments:
Parking area across US 2 from access road is plowed, but might be hard to get back out of for 2WD vehicles.
I barebooted up the road to the summer trailhead then used snowshoes. The old trail alignment is well packed.
Starr King Trail well packed and barebootable to Starr King. Looked like there must have been a mafia hit on a bird or something in the gladed portion - lots of feathers! No blowdowns.
From Starr King to Waumbek, there was a decent amount of minor drifting (enough to fill the trailbed, but no big drifts to break through). Previous hikers barebooted and left some postholes...I did my best to cover over/pack. One or two blowdowns burried in the snow, not really an issue.
Continued down Kilkenny Ridge Trail to the Waumbek viewpoint - trail looks to still be decently established from the recent journey through there.
