Mt. Tecumseh: Mt Tecumseh trail up and back.

Date of Hike: 03/12/09

Participants: just me

Trail Conditions: Hard packed crust. Snowshoe crampons biting in. Towards the top some breaking through. Anyone under 150lbs could probably bareboot with spikes. Some traction needed. No visible foot traffic from last weekend. The initial water crossings at trailhead are open and flowing. Upper crossings are still snow bridged.

Special Equipment: Wore snowshoes the whole day. Safety/Sun glasses recommended (spruce branches).

Comments: Mid morning start. Was unsure about bare booting, so stuck with snowshoes to prevent post holing. Lower section of trail through the hardwoods was smooth sailing. Upper section through "Spruce Alley", was not so fun. The branches were laden with ice hanging low and bridging each other across the trail. Lost my hat several times (the trees were obviously Patriots fans). Did my best to avoid damaging the tress, but it was a battle with no victor. The drag of the branches made me feel like I was short-roping "Sandy Pittman" to the summit (not everyone will get that). Summit outlook was calm and out of the wind. Nice place to eat lunch. Dumped half a pound of spruce needles out of my shirt when I got back to the car.
No quick way to get to Waterville Valley from Windham, Maine. Took the Kanc over and on the return trip took some back roads through "Rocket" country. No official sightings. 5 1/2 hours driving, 3hrs hiking. But, another 4k off the list. Had the trail alone all day. Well, just me, myself, and Irene..........
