The annual Saturday-after-Thanksgiving Mt. Washington hike originated in 1979 by Cruddytoes's Triple-Crown author friend, Cindy Ross. Cruddytoes & Co. have continued the tradition since the early 80s; I have been privileged to be part of the "Co." since 1992. If the weather warrants, we make it only as far as Lion's Head, but most years we reach the summit. When there's enough snow, we strap plastic sleds to our packs & slide down the Auto Road... weeeee!!!! (Some of us were kicking ourselves for not bringing them this year!)
There are the regulars--old, true friends whom I've shared many a White Mtn. mile with--Cruddytoes, Numbfoot, and HWWIAS (he who works in a sawmill), as well Becky & hubby Neal--and various friends who are kind enough to join us for the day & who we hope will become regulars--this year Artex, Sue P. and Joel (BTW, we missed you MEB!).
We had a great group this year. Although the weather teased with bright blue skies at 8 a.m., by the time we reached Lion's Head, everything--save for our clothing & gear--really WAS "black & white," but the winds were mild & the temps bearable for hanging out awhile on the summit. The amount of snow on the route made for good footing & relatively fast hiking. We were back down before 3 p.m. and finished the day at the Moat Mtn. Brew Pub in North Conway. Unfortunately, we all had to drive home which prevented much hardcore sampling & celebrating...
