So last week was spectacular on the Presi Range- so what to do this week? head right back up.

Rols (Paul) and I decided after hitting Monroe and Ike last week to approach the rockpile from the Jewell. Left the Cog lot at 620 and not long onto the trail we were shedding layers- it was very warm and muggy. We barebooted all the way to Washington, although right before heading above treeline there was a 1/4 mile of narrow slushy snow. After heading into the open it started to rain and get a little windy- so we thought the plans were over. Not long after, it stopped and became warm again- this was the theme of the day, weather change. Still never had to wear more than a shell, but only for 1/4 of the hike.

Headed over the Gulfside towards the summit. At one point the trail is covered with snow and unless you want to risk sliding into the Great Gulf you go further up around the rocks and approach the trail further on.

On Summit- nearly no wind, NO PEOPLE but an awful lot of noise from a generator. ACtually one nice person took a picture for us and then left the summit for us alone. We took a few pix and decided to head off the summit and lunch. Started to rain again but we stopped and saw the only other group (3) of the day heading up in our direction. Cog came by when eating lunch (some of my last pictures are dedicated to the Cog experience).

Heading down, we used Stabilicers below treeline on the portion of slushy snow and then barebooted the rest of the way.

I was excited to hit Washington again with nobody there but realized this- its not the crowds up there that take away from the experience, its the experience itself. We had the summit all alone and left. Generator noise, concrete buildings- even the views always have a road or railroad track in the way . I respect the whole setup on Washington for people that use it (as I have with my family), but while on a hike I think I'll pass.

Again, another great day in the Presi's with Rols. And Sapblatt, 5/20 can't come soon enough. If Paul calls me Mike one more time I am going to start assuming your identity :D

It had been a while since I last took the Jewell. I forgot what a wonderful trail it is to get to the Presidential ridge. The trip landed up as a perfect day. It was much warmer than Eric (a.k.a.Mike) and I expected and the winds, for the second week in a row, were way below normal. Clouds at time were dark and heavy but were high enough so that they left use with views that we could savor. The only substantial rain we encountered was 15 minutes after returning to our cars. It was really special having the trail and the entire summit to ourselves. THe trip was a great chance to refamiliarize myself with the route I plan to use for Jefferson & Washington this Winter.

A great trip....we felt we "stole" another spectacular day. Tuco, as usual, provided great companionship.

Percious, thanks.

We actually were pretty much tucked behind some rocks when it passed, out of direct view- below the waist anyway :) .

They may never have see nus with all that smoke blowing by.
