Trail Conditions: Soft and hard packed snow, a bit of ice. Above ~3000ft the snow was still hard enough packed that some form of traction was nice on trail, though bare booting was possible (not recommended by this hiker). Conditions were changing quickly though. The snow around the trail head was noticeably thinner and wetter when we got back down. Off trail the snow up high was still deep and potholed easily.
Special Equipment Required: I used crampons as I don't own micro-spikes yet. Wife used micro-spikes and I was jealous as they were the perfect traction. One member of our party went bareboot the entire way though I wouldn't recommend it as he slipped a fair bit above 2,500-3,000 ft.
Comments: The parking lot was not yet cleared. The house near the end of the plowing on Starr-King road had a ton of unfriendly signs up about no parking/trespassing/looking funny at their property so we decided to be good hikers and parked down in what appeared to be a public picnic area just down rt 2 from Starr King road.
