Mt. Whiteface, Mt. Passaconaway via Blueberry Ledge Trail, Rollins Trail, Dicey Mill Trail
Date of Hike: Sunday, February 15, 2009
Trail Conditions: Frozen granular, spring snow, ice
Special Equipment Required: Traction
Comments:
Crust in woods will support snowshoes!
Roadwalk to Quimby Hill (beginning of trail portion of Blueberry Ledge Trail) very icy - might not be a bad idea to wear Microspikes.
Blueberry Ledge Trail barebootable to Tom Wiggin Trail junction. Ledges aren't too bad, but one scramble will require crampons and/or an ice axe (I snowshoed the whole way, but used my ice axe to pull myself up and over the ice bulge on said scramble). A few blowdowns, herd path around the biggest.
Rollins Trail to Mt. Whiteface - barebootable.
Rollins Trail from Mt. Whiteface to Mt. Passaconaway - some minor drifting, a few patches of blue ice. Some sort of traction not a bad idea. A few blowdowns remaining, but I was able to remove a few with the help of another hiker.
Dicey Mill Trail from Rollins Trail to summit - possibly barebootable, though there are a few small patches of blue ice on the steeps that require caution. Trail well packed around to other viewpoint as well (didn't go to slide viewpoint, though it was broken out...Walden Trail not as packed, but some snowshoe tracks on it thanks to yesterday's VFTT hikers). Removed a few blowdowns.
Dicey Mill Trail to water crossing - barebootable. Removed a few blowdowns, though a few remain frozen in the snowpack (step over).
Dicey Mill water crossing has a narrow but decent snowbridge (supported by a log) over it.
Dicey Mill Trail below water crossing is in somewhat rough shape - lots of postholes, some monorail, a few larger blowdowns. I removed a few small blowdowns.
Road has been plowed all the way to the farm house this year - glare ice all the way back to Ferncroft, Microspikes not a bad idea.
