Mt. Roberts trail was covered with a dusting to a few inches of snow to the summit with good traction throughout. High Ridge Trail had a consistent, breakable crust over several inches of snow, a bit tedious in bare boots. Faraway Mountain and Cold Springs Trails also crusty with some minor mud down low. Very little ice. No blowdowns on the trip (thanks Carole and others!).
Snowshoes would have helped on the breaking crust of the higher carriage roads. No traction needed.
Inspired by HockeyPuck's trail conditions (and the weather) report, we picked the Ossipees over the Whites and, on this cold, windy day, the south-facing ledges of Roberts were bare-hands comfortable. Glorious long views in all directions in the dry atmosphere. We looked around for controversy on the Faraway summits but found none. Sorry to have missed R21 downrange; we almost chose that route.
