My son and I drove up 91 on Friday late afternoon/ evening. There were passing showers and three views of rainbows. The plan was to get to the trailhead on the Kanc and hike in .25 mi and find a spot in the dark to camp. I was telling him the plan about pitching the tent, brushing our teeth then putting the toothpaste and all of the food into a bear bag..."What? Are there going to be bears there?" Shouldn't be if take percautions. "But I never hiked in the dark." I knew that he was loosing heart. So I opted for a site ant the Hancock campground. Nice restfull night then the rain started. We had a slow start but got on the trail by 9:30.
It was my sons first hike of an ambitious peakbagging season. It was raining then drizzling. I thought that it might burn off and we may have a chance at some views. We turned off onto the Cedar Brook trail. And it was a brook trail. Lots of water crossings. The dry brook at the base of the slides just after the Northern loop trail was a pond. The acsent was wet and loose. We saw many flags for a trail crew. I felt a debt of gratitude to those who maintain our trails.
There was no view at the North peak. A couple who had passed us with thier dog earlier was on the peak. After taking pictures for each other we were on our seperate ways. The bogs in the col were overflowing and we slogged our way to the South Peak for my son's #13. Still no view just rain. Rain and more rain. The brook crossings were fast on the way back as we splashed right through them.
I had a meeting at the Highland Center then we feasted on Nachos and Burgers at the Mooseland.
My son was complaining of tired feet. He has new boots that are not fitting properly. He is 13 and still growing so this problem hopefully will take care of itself in the next month. ANY tips in this department would be welcome. Next weekend we arwe hoping for his #14 & #15. It is amazing to see him develop as a hiker.
