Date of Hike: Sat. 3-7-09
Hancock Notch, Cedar Brook, to Hancock Loop Trail jct., were broken and firm this morning. I went clockwise up to the North summit.
The trail looked like it had one or two hikers, maybe one with skis, since the snow earlier this week. It was bare booted and the trail was pretty rough, but the snow was in good shape for snowshoes. I wore them all day. I passed several bare booters down low and they weren't having any problems.
Snowshoes were needed for the ridge. The snow was not consolidated on the ridge, but lots of hikers today will fix that. Quite a tangle around the south summit with all the low branches. All trails are nicely packed out now with a nice snowshoe track. I met Dominic and Elliot on the top of the north peak. They had camped on the mountain last night. Dominic is blind and Elliot was his guide. Dominic was working on his Winter 48's with 21 so far. Needless to say I was humbled and inspired. I had been hearing cow bells while climbing to the north peak. It seems Elliot carries a bell so that Dominic can follow him on the trail. It works.
Beautiful sunny, warm day today, with hardly any wind on the north peak but howling winds on the south peak. Crampons not needed today. But when the temps drop that trail will probably turn to boiler plate. All major crossings are still snow bridged and intact. One step over blowdown and one duck under.
