N&S Kinsmans via Lonesome Lake/Fishin Jimmy/Kinsman Ridge Trails

Date of Hike: 1-10-09

Trail Conditions: Well stamped out trails all the way to the summits. Lonesome Lake solid enough to walk across. A few major blowdowns leading to the ridge; all easily circumvented. A couple very icy and potentially dangerous sections of trail on the steeps of Fishin Jimmy, but detours safely bypass these spots.

Special Equipment Required: Some form of traction gear helpful. Most folks were using either snowshoes fitted with aggressive crampons or something else “pointy.” We used microspikes which worked fine.

Comments: Optional – We left Lafayette Campground parking lot @ 9:05AM and got back to the car @ 2:55PM. Temps were a few degrees either side of zero on the ridge. We brought all the usual warm weather gear. Sun was shining brightly all day and very little wind up top, so we found it very easy to keep warm.

The parking lot on the left as you pull into Lafayette Campground is open, but they don’t plow it, at least not very often. We spent about 40 minutes helping a guy from Maine get his car unstuck from that lot. Best to avoid that lot unless you have 4-wheel drive.
