Looks like the mountain peaks list does not have a 200 foot col requirement.

That Mountain Peaks list has been a topic here before. I think it's only the peaks which are named on the topo maps or something...notice there is no West Bond and only 1 Wildcat. The elevations are not necessarily the summits, but where the benchmarks are. Ex. Whiteface.

Probably best to ignore that list. ;)

The mountainpeaks.net state lists are the hundred highest place name elevations on the USGS maps, and rather sloppily prepared. There is no col criteria, and some of the named elevations are not summits. It appears that they used topozone as a source. Some errors on topozone are also errors on their list. And they made many errors of their own.

On their New York list there is a 4040' Twin Mountain. The highest Twin Mountain in New York is in the Catskills at 3640'. The elevation of Twin Mt is erroneously listed on topozone at 4040', although the topozone map itself is correct. The Twin Mountain summit is on the Hunter USGS quad, and someone at topozone erroneously confused the elevation of Hunter Mountain (4040') with the quad USGS name for Twin Mountain.

So take mountainpeaks.net lists with several pounds of salt, or as NH_Mtn_Hiker suggests, ignore them.

Thanks dms,NH Mtn Hiker, and Mark for your prompt and informative responses on this question. Coming from any of the three of you on this board it's gotta be some good info. I kind of thought the mountainpeaks site seemed sort of HOKEY. I guess that's what happens sometimes when you do a very general Google search. I'll stick with Fred's list on this one. I'll be back with more questions on this list as I am just getting going on the bagging process on this QUEST.

I believe they actually just pulled them from the Geographic Names Database, errors and all - hence no unnamed peaks, and wrong elevations such as Bartlett Haystack

If you think NH is bad, try DC or IA
