Just stumbled across this page on the accuracy of route lengths measured in National Geographic TOPO!:
Accuracy of Trail Mileages Deduced From Topo! Measurements of Chantry Flat Trails, http://tchester.org/sgm/analysis/trails/chantry/topo.html
I haven't attempted to verify the conclusions, but the page looks well done and the conclusion is certainly plausable. Many of us are certainly aware that TOPO! often (usually?) underestimates the length of trails that one traces and analyzes.
One should also note that TOPO! is closed source software and could be doing any of a number of crazy things inside that would be hard to divine by external examination.
