mcrat was unable to go monday, but nhmtnhiker i had invited the night before and he is always up for a hike. since we always hike after work, and had the whole day this time, he suggested the entire AT from georgia to maine for the day. I suggested spur trail up adams instead. It was snowing out when we left, lightly. We went up the amphibrach, very pleasant walk thru the woods. This comes to the pentadoi and you go about 100 feet and there is the spur trail. quite steep but real nice. we wore stabilicers. partway up this i managed to bash my head on a jagged short branch sticking out from a tree that was down overhead that i didnt see. Bob said I was bleeding like a stuck pig, and not wanting to miss a photo op, told him quickly to do the important thing and document the carnage with his camera. In about 45 minutes we did the 1200 vertical up to crag camp and took a break and ate. no one was there, it was colder in than out. no views at all due to the snow and clouds. we stayed there about 35 minutes, bout long enough to get cold. We headed up a bit more and came to treeline. Visibility was about 60 feet..bout enough to see the next cairn. It appeared pointless to continue. The cone of Adams would have been big rocks with cracks not filled in completely with snow yet, would have been way too tedious, with no views. Back we headed. Bob saw an otter on the way back at the bridge crossing. We headed home in the inch or two of snow, and, while bragging about my new snow tires, slid around in a few 360's and went off the road. What a life. I was driving slow too. I probably annoyed a few drivers going 25 mph from twin mountain thru franconia notch to Lincoln, but it's not all fun. So I was covered with blood on my head, and had a sore back from the spinout. At least I got a good hike.

Sorry I couldn't make it, I managed to rub my eye the wrong way and brought back memories of my stick in the eye fun on Waumbek on that 1am last-day-of-winter hike. It's almost 6 months, and it still is acting up. By the time it felt manageable, my son released his breakfast in class and I had to pick him up. Day off or not, this hike wasn't meant to be.

Sorry to hear about the accident, but as they say 'Walk it off'.

Glad you still got a hike in... and with a fellow bluegrasser... Wish I could have made it.

- sorry about the head!!

just wondering - we busted out the spur trail last friday - was it still broken out?? - or all filled back.

funny how crag is colder in than out - I noticed that as well on a couple occasions. I would take a tent over crag in winter.

Sounds like someone needs a helmet on and off the trail.

spur trail

yes the spur trail was broken out..quite nice. the snow was pretty settled so breaking wouldnt have been bad i dont think. I gotta get bob up that trail when he can see the views.
as far as head carnage, i didnt even notice. He was telling me i looked nice and gory. my grandfather always told me to milk all injuries for as much attention and sympathy as possible..laffs :)

Agreed...It seems as though the Vaulted ceiling is to blame for the cold. My understanding is that the original plan called for a loft with a Pump Organ and then the plan was scrapped somewhere along the the way. There actually was a Pump Organ in the original Crag but someone used it for firewood.

still an organ in it - no? swore I saw oit last week.

I havenot been up to Crag in sometime, has there been an organ put in as of late? I think if a loft had been put in the ceiling would not have been so high and therefore a bit warmer.

I know it was there in summer 2003 or 2004 b/c was talking with the RMC guy about how they got it up. Pretty sure I saw it against the wall last week. I don't know if its a pump organ - or a plain organ -

actually - I don't know squat about organs so the damn thing could be a syntheseier and I wouldn't know the difference - imagine the erasure guys playing live at crag camp

So that was the guy I saw in the dress the last time I was up there. Guess I need to make a trip to Crag...like I said it's been awhile. I'll just follow hikerfast's blood trail.
