A great boon to hikers - day-hikers, slackpackers, etc - Susan at the Stratton Motel will transport you to trailheads across western Maine (and pick you up at cities farther afield).

Yesterday we drove in (almost) to the Caribou Valley A-trail crossing and decided that this was a foolish torment for a Honda Civic. We stayed at the Stratton Motel and asked about transport. For a very reasonable fee, this morning the proprietor drove us (in a high-clearance vehicle) almost in to the trail crossing allowing us to park on Maine 27.

She'll slack-pack through-hikers (or others) throughout this region. Practically everyone on the trail yesterday and today had come from Springer Mtn; a couple of young men were just headed SOBO.

The transit of the Crockers was made the sweeter by knowing we didn't have to challenge the deteriorating road again to get back out.

The birch woods, the views, especially from South Crocker, and the company made this a spectacular trip with excellent VFTT. Saw 10 people and two dogs today.
