This hike has innumerable stream crossings and after yesterday's rain I was a bit concerned that some of them might be difficult. The water was a bit high this morning but all the crossings were doable. We took the herd path to avoid the first two Cedar Brook crossings. That trail is very easy to follow and not only saves the crossings but is also a bit shorter.
Mud was the word of the day. A lot of mud on the Cedar Brook trail and also on the loop trail up on top. The bad areas up on the top were very bad.
The entire loop was mostly clear of blowdowns, but there is one pesky 'crawl under' a short ways in from the trail head on the Hancock Notch Trail. The handful of other blowdowns were simple 'step overs' but it would be nice not to have to crawl under that one tree.
"Early to bed, early to rise and your girl goes out with other guys."
At least that's the way I learned it years ago. It simply points out that it's not always an advantage to get up and out early. That was the case today. We were the first ones out of the parking lot today and as we went over the top we were in a cloud and the wind was a whipping. There were no views at all. An hour or so later as we headed out I looked back up and the mountain was in the clear. That's the way it goes. You win some and you lose some.
All in all though, it was a great hike and Lauky met lots of 'his' people 'friends'.
