Route: Attitash Trail from Diana's Baths to Moat Mountain Trail, over the summits to Dugway Road.
Date of Hike: Sunday 12/14
Trail Conditions: Crusty snow and ice. Surprisingly few blowdowns, considering the recent ice storm. Crossing Lucy Brook was difficult, but we did some improvised on-site civil engineering and managed to keep our feet dry.
Special Equipment Required: Crampons and trekking poles essential. We left the snowshoes behind and did not miss them much, despite the occasional deeper, softer patch of snow.
Comments: our original plan was to ascend Red Ridge, but the Lucy Brook crossing there was particularly dodgy. So we continued on to Moat Mountain Trail and bought some extra distance and climbing in the process. We got out just after dark.
The trees are decorated in lovely holiday ornaments, courtesy of the ice storm.
Thanks to Kathy and Victoria for a wonderful day of hiking, and to Don for shuttling assistance.
