North Tripyramid, Middle Tripyramid via Livermore Trail, Scaur Ridge Trail, Pine Bend Brook Trail, Mt. Tripyramid Trail

Date of Hike: Sunday, January 11, 2009

Trail Conditions: Packed powder

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes

Comments:

Livermore Trail groomed for first 2 miles - snowshoe/skating in the middle, classic track on each side.

I broke trail the 1.8 miles after that (tried to avoid a day old classic track which was covered in 3-6" of powder). Livermore Trail now has a decently packed snowshoe track leading to the Scaur Ridge Trail junction. Some leaning trees and branches hiding under the powder. About a foot of powder on top of the frozen base.

Scaur Ridge Trail didn't look like it had been used in quite some time. Trail had 6-24" of powder. Warning - the trail is very hard to follow just after a dip when it enters a birch glade. I bushwhacked around for half an hour trying to find a blaze. Take the very first sharp left that I broke out (I tried draw some arrows/obscure the other route). I couldn't find the last .1-.2 mi. of trail either, but either set of my tracks will lead you to the Pine Bend Brook Trail, within about 50 feet of the Scaur Ridge Trail junction.

Pine Bend Brook Trail was partially broken out (thank you folks who did that yesterday!), but the new snow and winds covered up a significant portion of the trail. It is now decently broken out starting at the Scaur Ridge junction.

Mt. Tripyramid Trail from North to Middle was also pretty much wiped clean by windblow snow. It is now decently broken out.

I removed some blowdowns by hand, but some work will need to be done. Nothing too hard to get around, though.

Water crossings no problem.

Status of other trails - only ski tracks on Livermore Trail above Scaur Ridge junction. North loop (to north slide) not broken out. Since set of bareboot tracks leading toward south loop (to south slide). Pine Bend Brook Trail below Scaur Ridge Trail not broken out since 3" of powder+winds. Mt. Tripyramid Trail beyond Middle not broken out. Sabbaday Brook Trail not broken out.
