Let’s stick to the plan, I thought.
30% chances of rain, and it was suppose to clear up in the afternoon. That was Saturday morning at the Starr King trailhead. I started to climb with a good motivation, despite the fact that my brand new Camelbak had a leak and I didn’t have an extra Nalgene in my pack.
Everything was fine until I passed Waumbek’s summit. I was getting cold because of the light to heavy drizzle, and the winds were blowing on the higher elevations. Just to make myself more miserable, the tall ferns along the trail were brushing against my legs, and my (regular not waterproof) pants were getting constantly soaked. I was wearing my “fat pants”, and they are so large for me they were getting puffy and sooooo uncomfortable !!
Three Weeks passed and then I had the option to bail out at York Pond. I had a CB to communicate with my friends (bushwhacking the Pilot Range), so I could tell tell which trailhead to pick me up later. I turned on the thing and it wasn’t working. I changed the batteries, still nothing. The humidity had got in and it became totally useless. I didn’t have other choices than go north toward Mill brook Rd, the original plan. I kept the CB outside my jacket (oh yeah, I learned that day that my gore-tex is not waterproof anymore), protecting it from the rain the best I could.
So I went on, Terrace was not too bad even without the views. After that there was only one big ascent to do, Cabot. And I knew I could count on a nice break inside the camp. I met an man there, I think it’s the same guy that Jason Berard is talking about in his TR.
The Bulge and the Horn were easily done, and by that time my pants were dry and the CB was working. No contact though. I enjoyed views from the very cool summit of the Horn, and headed down toward Unknown Pond. I finished 10,5 hours after leaving my friends in the morning, and was very glad to meet again with Motabobo at the Mill Brook parking lot.
For the first time I can say that I didn’t really enjoyed my day. The first 8 hours were a real nightmare, and after that I was just really tired. Fighting against the cold is very exhausting.
Plus I forgot my hiking poles in the Mill Brook parking lot at the end of the day.
Oh well !
