trails: old speck trail, mahoosuc trail
conditions: parking lot was well plowed. we had expected to be breaking this one out, but as luck would have it we had a group of young men start a couple hours before us who tracked things out all the way to the mahoosuc trail before we caught up. at this point the trail should be packed out pretty nicely. looked like roughly a foot of new snow down low and it was pretty heavily loaded in up until the trail over the eyebrow. along the ridge there seemed to generally be less new snow but some significant drifting. based on the blazes near the summit i'd guess there is probably 4-5 feet of snow in total up high. would have made for some nice winter only viewpoints had skies been clear. water crossings were frozen and buried.
equipment: snowshoes.
comments: a decidedly non spring like day on old speck. with the new snow and cold winds it felt more like a mid winter hike. the woods were gorgeous with all the fresh snow cover. the summit stayed socked in though there were some limited views lower down. didn't even think about attempting the ladder to the tower given the lack of views and icy ladder, but the other guys up there were giving it a shot when we took off. thanks to cynthia for a great hike.
