Old trail to the Nye Slide?

Sunday we hiked the NPT south from the Averyville TH for about 5 miles. When we were pretty sure we were below the Nye slide we cut uphill through the woods towards it. To our surprise we happened upon a very old trail that led towards it. There were many deadfalls that had been sawn through a long, long time ago, some of them quite big.

Does anybody know of this trail?
