The officially maintained trails were in good enough shape, although there were some mud spots in places. Stream crossings were pretty easy although the mighty tough little dog had a couple of kerplunks in Franconia Brook coming and going. The Owl’s Head trail was easy to find using step count but the small cairn confirmed it. The trail had lots of blowdowns above the slide of varying types but that’s nothing new. Once again I found myself on a herd path off the main slide trail. It was a bit wet up high on the way in due to melting snow on the branches. All evidence of the previously accepted peak was gone; at the new peak all that was present was a small cairn; the sign was gone.

Last week I watched football with 108,000 of my “closest friends”. Today I saw no one away from the parking area until meeting a nice couple near the top. What a contrast. I saw four more on my way back in the same place and that was it until the Lincoln Woods Trail and even then there weren't many. Peak foliage but so few people – Friday?. I took the day off so Pepper could finish his 4K list for 2009 in the sun instead of rain.
