Q: What do you make sure you have on a bad weekend?
A: A good hike.
I didn’t make it out to Garfield, Hawthorne Falls, South Twin, West Bond, North Twin Loop Trail, All of the White Mountains, The Moon, Olympus Mons etc. on Saturday. You couldn’t describe it as being a good day. In fact, it reached it’s ugly tentacles into Sunday, keeping me up to 2:30am. That only gave me 1 hour of sleep as I was supposed to get up at 3:30am and meet Barbarossa at Miller State Park for 5:30am!
No problem -- until I overslept and then, while racing over to the trailhead, got a speeding ticket! Wait, I just woke up, I was dreaming – no speeding ticket. DOH! But it’s 5:45am I was supposed to meet Eric 15 minutes ago!! It must’ve been a pretty sight seeing me charging to my car, in nothing but my undies, Jess chasing after me with my clothes and the 4 cats close behind dragging my pack. Now, here I am, bad weekend and all, 2 F’ing hours late meeting Eric and I doubt I even brushed my teeth before I left. But, I managed to catch Eric as he was coming down from Pack Monadnock (we started from North Pack) and he jumped right back in & hiked right back to the top.
So, it turned out to be not so bad. Pack and North Pack Monadnock area is pretty nice. The woods in this area are quite pretty – much better then the woods of Grand Monadnock, just a few miles away. It doesn’t give you a sense of remoteness but it feels pretty laid back and that’s not bad. Views are nice, especially if you take the Cliff Trail to some ledges near the summit of North Pack Monadnock. Perhaps it was a little too “civilized” for Barbarossa (who hiked in the mud and snow w/ sandals – gives a new meaning to the word, “postholing”) and we did end up cleaning up some people’s trash, but I think we managed to enjoy the beautiful, sunny day.
Here’s a few pictures of the views, The Author and Friend Barbarossa.

This is a nice little ½ day hike – I suggest going in from the North.
