BEEKMAN — Firefighters are battling a blaze along the Appalachian Trail in the Town of Beekman, where a stubborn brush fire has reignited after nearly being extinguished yesterday.
According to Beekman firehouse staff, the fire was first reported about 4 a.m. on Saturday. Fire crews battled the blaze all day, believing it to be extinguished by evening.
About 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, however, the brush fire was again burning along the trail, with 48 firefighters from the Union Vale and Beekman Fire Departments on the scene.
“We just got through with making a hundred sandwiches,” Ladies Auxiliary member Joan Scoralick said.
Scoralick said the brush fire was “not small” and the trail had been closed.
