Date of Hike: 8/28/09
Trails: Cabin Tr to Big Rock Cave Tr to Old Paugus Tr to Lawrence Tr to Cabin Tr (Loop)
Conditions:
Big Rock Cave: lightly used, mainly dry
Old Paugus - even more lightly used, mainly dry, lots of blowdowns
Lawrence - mostly dry, some blowdowns but well maintained (really fun trail)
Cabin (upper 0.5 mile) just awful, many blowdowns
Cabin (lower 2.2 miles) some blowdowns, some muddy sections, but generally good footing
Special Equipment Required: Poles are very helpful picking through the blowdowns and descending Lawrence with its sections of loose gravel. The Wonalancet Outdoor Club Sandwich Wilderness Map was helpful.
A few bugs. Brook crossings no big deal.
Comments: This loop provided a huge variety of trail and forest types and conditions! A variation on the old adage about NE weather: If you don't like the trail just walk a minute...
Took advantage of the cool dry day to hike an area that has been on the list for a couple of years - had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the views, mainly from the trails but also near the summit. The true summit is a 0.3 mi B/W from the Lawrence/Old Paugus Jct. We poked along (took us 6 hours) enjoying big rock cave and various viewpoints. Lots of elevation gain and loss so allow a little extra time and we recommend the Lawrence Trail for descending because of the views. Also I would not personally attempt this loop unless conditons are dry (tree roots, logs and slabs).
Saw no one! One snake and an owl.
