I suspect only a couple of VFTT readers are interested in this peak, but I thought it was worth writing up.
I was working at one of my field sites up yonder yesterday and found myself with the afternoon open, so I thought I'd have a whirl at Peaked Mountain (2270 ft.). It's the Aroostook County county highpoint and I believe, the most northern of any peaks that show up on any northeast peakbagging lists.
I took the Realty Rd. to Pinkham Rd. to Jack Mountain Rd. The Delorme shows an old road that starts just east of the Piscataquis County line and curls around teh southwest flank. The 2004 (but not older editions) Delorme shows a road just east of that one that heads north and stops short of the real incline of the hill. I opted for that one since I could drive a bit further. It didn't gain any elevation on roads, but it made the mileage shorter (since you can't actually drive the former road I mentioned).
Anyway, I bushwhacked to the summit in about 1 hour. First I had to fight through the raspberry clearcut but then it was a mostly open sugar maple stand. Near the top (it has a very distinct peak jutting above the rest of the mountain - hence the name Peaked) it got a bit thicker, but I never had much trouble pushing through. I followed some orange flagging for quite a way. The flagging was put there within a year or two and led most of the way to the summit, although it stopped when the going got thicker.
I got some hazy views from the summit to the southwest of Chandler Mtn. Often I pull flagging when I see such a flagrant foul, but since this was private land, I figured I'd leave it this time. I followed it most of the way down and it hit the road just north of where my truck was. Round trip was about 1:45 and I was on my way home.
A very uneventful, un-spectacular peak, but an easy ~ 3 mile bushwack.
