Date Hiked: 12/1/07
Trail Conditions: Little to no snow down low; about an inch or two up on the higher slopes and ridge. Some icing on Peekamoose, on the areas between the lookout ledges and the final climb to the summit. This is due to the spring, which is still flowing. Ice is avoidable, just be careful of patches hidden by dusting of snow. No significant blowdown problems anywhere on trail between Peekamoose Rd and Denning trailhead. The two log bridges over the Neversink and Deer Shanty brooks are in good shape, but crossing required caution since both did have a dusting of snow and a little ice.
Special Equipment: Neither snowshoes nor traction aids were ever required, but cold weather clothing was definitely needed on this seasonably chilly, very blustery day.
Comment: The storm coming in on 12/2/07 will likely (hopefully) bring at least a few more inches of snow to these peaks. We'll see. This was a good day for wildlife sightings-I saw an eagle near the Rondout Resevoir on the morning drive, and then caught a glimpse of a snowshoe hare on Peekamoose; my friends almost had an owl run into the windshield on the drive home!
