Pemi Loop Clockwise
Date of Hike: 9-19-09
Trail Conditions: Throughout the morning, all exposed areas of Franconia & Garfield Ridges were covered in rime ice and a bit slick. All trails around the Pemi were relatively dry and firm…just a few muddy spots in low areas. No difficult water crossings.
Special Equipment Required: All winter gear needed, except traction.
Comments: Got hit with wild conditions in the morning on Flume.....temps around freezing, wind gusts up to 50 mph, zero visibility, rime ice covering every tree & rock! We stepped right into December! We layered up with fleece, shells, balaclavas, mitts and fought the elements all the way across Lafayette and most of the way down Garfield Ridge until we got back down into tree cover. By the time we hit Garfield around noontime, the skies cleared and the sun appeared. The rest of the day was beautiful but felt much more like a late October hike than a hike in late September....temps remained in the low 50s most of the afternoon. We started @ 4:15AM and finished @ 10:15PM.
Glad we did the Loop before the suspension bridge at the end of Lincoln Woods is removed on 9-21. Are there any plans to replace it in the future?
