the trail head is 4 mile east of the route 74 route 9 intersection, just north of schroon lake. after a turn you will see a parking area on the right for about 4 cars. The total RT distance is 12.6 miles and about 2000 feet of accent counting the hills in the first 3 miles. the first 3 miles from route 74 to the road is a very nice trail. Wide and easy on the feet because it is dirt and pine needles. Early in the hike you come opon a bog with dead trees that looks a lot like avalanch pass with the trees sticking up like tooth picks. For a bunch of dead trees it is very beautiful. there are a couple of small bumps in the trail in the beginning, not to much climbing . The last accest just before you reach the road goes up about 80 feet immediately and then over a 10 minute time period goes up to a total of about 250 feet. You start to decend to the road and it goes down about 180 feet. At the road take a left and the parking lot is about 3-5 minutes away. The Summit is 3.3 miles from this point. The accent from the parking lot is about 1500 feet. the first part is gradual on dirt and pine needles again which make the decent very easy. The last 500 feet or so is on bare rockface, a little steeper here. There are two viewing places on the west side with views north and towards schroon lake. The east side has a viewing of pharoah lake and treadway mountain. You can see some of lake champlain also.
