A bit crisp in the morning, then the day warmed up nicely. The first mile or so of this trail is a nice flat walk through hemlocks and beech. The leaves on the trail made a magical sound and the leaves remaining on the trees were golden and bright, and the smells were unmistakingly late autumn. I checked on a site that I discovered a year ago, where a moose had died and been eaten. Many of the bones were still in the area.

There was no snow until about half-way up the trail, then quickly became about a half-foot deep. At the top of Scaur Ridge, I got sidetracked following some moose tracks to the west of the trail. Continuing from there, the trail enters into the shadow of the summit and the snow quickly gets deep, perhaps two feet. Although it was mid-day, the sun was behind the summit until I reached the top.

I descended until I reached the point where there was no snow, then headed off-trail to the nnw, up and over Scaur Ridge and followed it down for a while. There's lots of bear sign in there, and some of it was no more than a day old so they're definately not in deep hibernation yet.

Then I descended to Horne Brook and followed that out. There's tons of moose sign in there. As I passed a thick stand of spruce I heard a moose call to me, which sounds like a cow berping. It moved in my direction and called a few more times as I whipped out my camera. I heard nothing for a minute, then I heard it trot away from me. It must have smelled me. Oh well...

I took my time taking pictures, then noticed it was getting dark. Looking up, I saw Venus and Moon through the trees, capping off a beautiful day in the forest.
