Has anyone camped and hiked in this area? I'm looking for a place in SW Mass where we can camp and do a little hiking with my 74 yr young father. Looking for a few good views and a little peace and quiet. As this area is open to ATV's, are they an issue?

Thanks!!

I've never camped up there but I have camped in Beartown S.F. which is closer to Great Barrington, MA and not Pittsfield. The state campground in BearTown is open til end of October I think and is on a pretty little pond. It is also close to many hiking trails and the AT. October Mtn SP is also a bit north of Beartown and closer to Pittsfield. I've never camped there but I believe there are state campsites there too.

For a nice short hike with awesome views, there is a place called Laura's Lookout just south of Stockbridge, MA that has a small lookout tower on the top and a map pointing out various locations. It is short but there is a climb involved, but the reward is nice.

Thanks Jay, I'm checking out the other campgrounds that you mentioned.

Anyone out there who's camped at Pittsfield?

Thanks

Camped there in April about three years ago. We were alone except for one other group. Alas, that group was a fraternity or something, stayed up all night engaged in some kind of noisy hazing.

There's a bit of a view from the ridge, not much of a hike involved. In the photo below, Mike is standing at the edge of the park road.

Didn't see any ATVs when we were there.
