As someone who speaks Norwegian, reveres bears, is proficient with a rifle and has wanted to go to Svalbard for the last forty years, let me just say:

O. M. G.

I also know about 100 Norwegians who are probably already in line ahead of me. I'm amazed they even have to announce this opening. Norwegians of an outdoor bent are generally ga-ga over Svalbard.

I have an acquaintance over here who just returned from a research trip there. Everyone who went into the field had to qualify with a rifle.

My all-time favorite road sign translates as "Applies to all of Svalbard":

Wow. For those keeping score at home, that's at 51.31º N, a latitude south of all of Alaska. I might not have to go all the way to James Bay or Churchill if my timing were right ...
