Just before I hit the trail, two guys came out wearing snowshoes. I asked how far up the trail I'd need them. They said I might be able to summit without them. I started out carrying them. The snow seemed to be 6" deep, but could well have been 8", which legally requires shoes. Although the trail was well packed, the snow was soft and it was possible that further along, here and there, I might make deep boot prints. I put them on about 50 yards past the register. There were occasional rocks to kick, but overall there was enough snow to make it OK.
The rocks on the 2 minor brook crossings had enough snow on them to hold the snowshoes and crossing was easy.
The trail was already broken to Porter. No significant blowdown anywhere.
