A bit windy but a nice day for a hike. I got started at 4:45 from Appalachia (timed to avoid using headlamp) and made good time to Madison. The plan for the day was Gulfside to West side to Crawford path. There were several small groups doing the traverse but no big groups. That seemed to be a good description of the day, many small groups of two of three but only one group of eight encountered. The forecast was for light winds but they were present enough that I hiked with long pants and a windblock fleece and even wore mittens for awhile. It worked well but when out of the wind on the back side of the Jefferson, Monroe and Eisenhower, it was a bit warm. As usual I was amazed seeing trail runners out with minimal or no gear. The conditions were fine along the northern presis but as I neared Washington, the summit started clouding in with Adams occasionally cloud covered when I looked back. I got to Lakes a bit early around 11:30 and took a 15 minute break. From there out it was nice walking over to Pierce. Plenty of late day hikers on the trail. I hit Pierce around 2 PM. As usual the hike down Crawford path felt far longer than normal. I finally hit the bottom and was back at my car at 3:45 PM.
One strange thing for the day was the lack of running into familiar faces on the trail, during most prior presis, I have run into numerous folks I knew. With the exception of one now inactive member engrossed in conversation at the end of the day, it was all new faces this year
