Date of Hike: Saturday, March 9th
Trail Conditions: Valley Way, Osgood, Gulfside to Thunderstorm Junction, Lowe's to Adams summit were in great shape Saturday morning where snowshoes were perfect for the conditions. Steep part of Gulfside up from Edmands Col to the Jefferson Loop Trail had a bypass that went straight up in the early morning before the steep snowfield section, however the snow field section was easy to get across. Jefferson loop trail was in good shape to summit. Coming down to Monitcello Lawn and the Gulfside to Sphinx Col had some choppy rock here and there but mostly snow covered. Mount Clay Loop didn't have much use early in the day but it was snow covered nicely. Along the Gulfside Trail there was a Jewell Trail bypass that is being heavily used. Gulfside trail from Clay Loop to Washington's summit had snowshoe, boots, and ski tracks in a few places, snow was not that firm so it was mashed potato like. Crawford Path down to Lakes of the Clouds hut is a big snowfield for the most part with a few different short cut tracks and sledding tracks, mashed potato in places, etc. Monroe Loop Trail, most people are just heading straight up the mountain off trail, loop was in decent shape though, it gets rocky more here. Monroe Loop and Crawford Path to Eisenhower Loop Trail is a mix of snow, minor drifting, rocks sticking out of the snow, boots are better through here then snowshoes. Eisenhower Loop is much more snow filled and packed. Crawford Path to Pierce is snow and packed well. Webster Cliff Trail to Mizpah Hut is in good shape, there is a trail that veers off to the right that leads to nowhere, stay left and up. From hut to Jackson is now broken out and packed down well, Webster-Jackson trail is a highway and a slide!
Special Equipment: snowshoes, microspikes
Comments: Long day on the range, wish it never ended, Nice running into lots of people from here and elsewhere, too many to name, Thanks B&G for the car spot and Mike, Gina, and Doug for the company for the final stretch and breaking trail to Jackson! Report / Pictures
