Was looking for some reading recomendations. I recently watched GI Jane on TV the other day and was going to go to the Library to get a D.H. Lawrence book. (several quotes in the movie are from DH Lawrence poems).

Anybody want to toss out random author's or books they they like and or would reccomend?

Gee this could get out of hand quickly! :D

How about Brain Greene's "The Elegant Universe"? It makes string theory very understandable. No equations, I promise! :D

As for a hiking/climbing/mountaineering book: "Breaking Trail", by Arlene Blum.

Any book by Bernd Heinrich for those interested in New England nature and ecosystems. This guy deserves to be more popular.

As a writer and one who hold a degree in English, this thread is begging me to reply.

Anything by Guy and Laura Waterman should be "required reading" for Northeast outdoor recreators!

I'm currently re-reading "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance". It's absolutely wonderful and insightful (Note that this is NOT coming from someone with an interest in motorcylces).

Also recently enjoyed:

"A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf" by John Muir
"Timequake" by Kurt Vonnegut
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkein
"The Old Life" by Donald Hall [poetry]

If you are one of the millions who enjoyed The Da Vinci Code by New Hampshire's own Dan Brown, read some stuff by giants upon whose shoulders he stood. He doesn't list these as sources, but he should have:

The White Goddess and King Jesus by Robert Graves.

The Golden Bough by Sir James George Frazer.

If you want to open a thread about hiking or outdoors books, that's fine. But general reading is a bit off topic for this site. Feel free to open a new thread if that's what you want to talk about.
