I went up to the Sugarloaf area this weekend to visit the parents, and I convinced them to go for a hike on Sunday morning. The only big mt around there that i had not climbed yet was Redington, mostly because i did not really know it existed before reading this website. We headed off early sunday morning, and got to the AT crossing on the CVR around 8:15. The road was in pretty bad shape. I have driven in there many times over the years, and this was probably the worst shape i have seen it in. But we did get in just fine using a subaru sedan that had a good amount of clearance. There were a few close spots though. We decided to park near the AT and walk the rest of the road, about a mile to the fork.

We used the directions that Mohammed had posted on this website, and they worked out great. Without them, we surely would have gotten lost since there were about 5 different intersections in the logging roads. I actually enjoyed the walk up the mt. I had read a lot of people saying it was boring or ugly, but it was a beautiful day and the views were great. The leaves were about 30-40 percent in color, and there were lots of nice plants and mushrooms to view on the way. The walk was about 5 miles of the gentlest climb you can ever do going up a mountain. I believe the vertical was just under 2,000 feet, but i barely broke a sweat going up.

We got to the top in about 2 hours, and checked out the wind farm equipment. I believe the endless energy company is nearing the phase to put the towers on top of the mt range. I think there might be a vote or something coming up soon about that. If you click on the link, you can see proposed pictures of what the towers would look like. There seems to be a lot of hiker opposition to them, but they would not bother me. It seems to me that they would provide clean energy and better access to caribou valley. We also saw the peak marker that said 3984 w/ a cross through it and below that it said 4010. I guess a few years ago when they remeasured the mt, it had "grown" to 4k status.

So after hanging out at the top for 15 minutes, we headed back down. The return trip took a little less than 2 hours. I noticed that while going down, i could see Spaulding, Sugarloaf, and Abraham. It was definitely very interesting to see a different POV. I have some pics from this under my pics

Great pics, including Gulf Hagas and Yeosemite! On the hike to Redington (the hike in, more rewarding than the summit itself), I tried to photgraph some of the junctions mentioned by Mohammed. My trail guide was a print out of his directions! Up the road and into the valley would be a great day trip on cross country skiis. Instead of turning right toward Redington, the trail makes a loop around the pond (I think). The CV Rd. is often broken out by snowmobiles and when you head for home, you will discover that the road has a gradual downhill tilt! With a good snow winter, the river itself can become your trail. Pick it up at the Sugarloaf Golf Course or upstream near the Jct. of the AT and the C.Valley Road.
Although the tower is an eyesore, it is also a good landmark
