Hey all...

Just wondering if there is any buzz about a REI coming to Maine? I checked their website and didn't see anything.

I ask because, all of a sudden in the past month, I've heard REI advertized on the local radio station. Never heard any such ads...especially for a store that's in Mass as the closest location...

Wouldn't that be nice. Maybe in the new shops across the street from LL Bean??:)

They have been advertising in Western MA as well. They even mentioned purchasing items on the web. It was on our local AM station and took me by surprise.
I'm wondering if business is hurting with our economic downturn. I doubt I would be buying much at this time but I did spend the $300 dividend. Midweek when I was in Framingham, the store was a bit of a ghost town but it was fairly busy on Saturday.

It has actually mystified me why they do not have a store in NH. Are they in favor of imposing sales tax on people? I imagine that given the recession we are in (hopefully it will not end up being a depression) opening any new brick and mortar stores doesn't sound too smart... but in S Nashua, there are many vacant storefronts that could be grabbed up for pennies on the dollar. I bet business would be gangbusters.

As far as I know, REI has no plans to go north of the Reading Ma. store (where I work) in the next few years. The folks at HQ said they have not found the right location to make the move into northern New England. If you go onto rei.com under the jobs page you can see where we are opening new stores in the near future. We usually start hiring as soon as the lease/deed is signed. There is nothing on the website in N.E. right now.

Joe.
