Hey ya'll,

I'm looking for personal suggestions for a reservable campground in or around Zion National Park in Utah for late May. My plan is to take a group of six here for five or six days, and use the campground as a basecamp for one or two backpacking trips. First-come, first-serve campgrounds are out of the question--gotta have reservations unfortunately for this trip. Anybody have any suggestions?

Anybody stayed at either of these campgrounds? Both are reservable, and I've read decent reviews for both.

(1) Watchman Campground - in Zion
(2) Zion Canyon Campground - in Springdale

Any reviews/suggestions/tips on those campgrounds or any others nearby?

Thanks!

I've stayed at the National Park campgrounds in Zion several times. They're fine. Nothing fancy but very acceptable. They don't have showers, but I've stopped at the private campground on the left in Springdale just after leaving the park and bought a shower there.

Greg -
I have been researching Zion, as my wife and I are planning to hit a bunch of national parks this fall or next spring. We're leaning toward doing hotels, rather than camping, however. If you change your mind and are interested in hotel information, feel free to give me a call at home.

BTW, when are you going? If we are going at the same time, maybe we can hook up for some biking/hiking/drinking, etc. :D

Regards,
Marty

Marty, I've stayed at the Novel house which is a B&B in Springdale, it's a nice place, I think it was a bit pricey if you paid directly, but each room had it's own theme, I was in the Rudyard Kipling room. It was part of the the package deal through Western Spirit Cycling when I road between Bryce to Zion so I didn't pay it directly, but by the feel of the place, it looked like a classy joint.

Mosquito Cove

There is a place about 5 minutes outside of Springdale that the locals call Mosquito Cove. It's on BLM land, so camping is free and there is plenty of space to accomodate everyone. It is near the virgin river and gets a lively crowd, mostly climbers and canyoneers. Maybe not the best place to take the kiddies. Do a google on "Zion Mosquito Cove" and you will find some details here and there.

We'll be there in late April and found a secluded 3-bedroom house at the foot of Canaan Mt (wilderness study area) in Hurricane for $650/week. Doesn't help you with campground selection, but goes to show how reasonable the prices can be there, for anyone interested.
