Couldn't ask for a nicer day for March 11. 50 degrees and sunny.
Started out from the Denning Rd PA at 9:00. Headed up the PE trail to the PT trail and crossed the Neversink River. After crossing the river I left the trail and headed East along the river. In the valley there was very little ice and patches of snow. I had crossed the river several times for better terrain. The flow of the river was less than I had expexted due to the snow melt. The further up river I went the deeper the snow was getting.
By the time I was between Slide and Lone it was time to switch to the snoeshoes. I had planned on passing by the summitt of Rocky and try an ascent from the NE, but somehow I had made the turn a bit early and went up from the North. The climb wasn't to bad, but near the top it was quite a fight getting thru the thick stuff. As I neared the summitt I heard voices, but they were departing rather than coming to the canister. I had summitted at 12:30, had a snack and continued on towards Lone.
I had taken a direct bearing for Lone, but it was hard to hold a straight course off of Rocky. I decided to drop off to the North a bit for better terrain. This worked out well, and gave me a pretty clear path to the summitt. I reached the summitt by 1:45 and signed in.
JayH. Thanks for the hello in the register. Made for not being alone on Lone. By the way, did you notice the tree that the canister is on? Looks like it took a shot of lightning. A burnt crack all the way down the tree.
With daylight burning, I had to keep moving. I departed Lone towards Table / Peekamoose. A short ways off of Lone I encountered a ledge of 10-15 feet. I went to the right, then to the left, back to the right, and back to the left. Neither side looked like a good way around. I had decided to get out my rope and go straight. The easiest way down was right over the edge with a short rappell. Now I had a clear shot to Table. While in the col I had decided to try to bushwack to the col between Table and Peekamoose. I had climbed to a bit of a shelf below the summitt of Table and beared South towards Peekamoose. I had popped out on to the trail closer to Table than I wanted, but I did avoid the peak.
Back on the PT trail, I made my way to the summitt of Peakamoose by 3:30. The trail was a bit icy but snowshoes or crampons were not needed. I took a short break on Peekamoose and headed back on the trail to Table.
I had crossed the Peak of Table about 4:00, took a quick look around and kept on going. The trail back down was snow covered, but doable barebooting.
I made way back to the PA by 5:30. This turned out to be a very doable hike for me, but I had no desire to hit the gym afterwards. I had seen no one all day, just heard the distant voices on Rocky
