It was such a beautiful day I needed to get out, I got a late start so I needed to chose a short trip. I did a solo trip up Rusk. There was about 3 inches of wet snow at the trailhead. about half a dozen people had signed in for Hunter. I headed up the trail starting about 11:20. At the haipin trail I started the bushwack. I took a bearing headed straight for the summit. I knew there were som ledges near the summit to When in doubt my plan was to bear right. After about 1/2 a mile I approached a steep drainage. I changed my course a bit more to the north and parrallelled the drainage. It was a steady steep climb. The slope eased a bit after about an hour of steady climbing. I knew I was near the top. Soon I spotted the ledges. I found a path up between the rocks by following some coyote or fox tracks. Once through the scamble I just found my way through the trees head gradually up. Just as I thought there was no more up I considered starting to backtrack or circle to find the canister, but I continued on in the direction I was headed. In a couple of moments I spotted the cannister. After signing in, I headed to the NE to see if I could find some views. I waded through some 2-3' drifts along the ridge towards an open area. I got some fantastic views towards the north and east. I could see the Devil's Path Range, Kaaterskill High Peak and the Black Dome Range. I then headed back in a path several hundred yards east of my ascent. It seemed even steeper on thge descent than the ascent. I may Have been able to make better time if I stopped to put on my crampons, because I was sliding quite I bit. I opted to continue without stopping to remove my pack to get out additional gear. Sooon I was back on my old track. I followed then back to the jeep trail and back to the car.
It was a glorious day to be out, The temperatures were just around the freezing mark. The sun is definately gaining strength. Spring will be here soon, but hopefully not before I get a couple more winter peaks.
