Date of Hikes: Friday and Saturday, the 1st and 2nd
Trails: Saddleback & The Horn - Grey Ghost and Tri-Color Ski Trails, A.T. connector spur, A.T.
Bigelows - Stratton Brook Pond Road, Fire Wardens Trail, A.T.
Parking: For Saddleback and The Horn we parked near the main lodge, the mountain is currently not open for skiing so you don't have to worry about parking, paying, or watching out for skiers. Have heard that it's in the process of being purchased and might open some time this winter. For the Bigelows I would recommend parking off the side of Route 27 at the beginning of Stratton Brook Pond Road making sure not to block any car or snowmobile traffic. We drove (Subaru Forester and a Jeep) to the turn around just before the A.T. crossing where there was a small car stuck in the snow that we had to help dig out and push up a hill, kind of dicy in spots and with anymore snow even four wheel drive high clearance vehicles would get stuck.
Trail Conditions: Saddleback & The Horn - The ski trails had enough snow to snowshoe and there is a nice track the winds it's way up the slopes, above the slopes care was required to stay on trail at times because scrubby bushes looked just like cairns. Be cautious if the visibility is low, it could get really confusing.
Bigelows - The road walk is nicely packed down by snowmobiles, the Fire Wardens Trail and A.T. has been packed down nicely by our group of six on Saturday plus six more hikers on Sunday.
Special Equipment: Snowshoes
Comments: Really great two days in Maine hiking, no views but some decent wind and low visibility to make the hikes adventurous. It was a nice way to start off the year with Whitney, Pam, Tim, Brent, and Matt. Report / Pictures
