Mushy at the bottom, frozen mostly solid above ~2,500 feet. Crossing Drake's Brook was do-able, just required careful footing and a plan. Trails were well maintained - there were a couple of blowdowns to walk around, but someone had been on Drakes with an axe doing some cleanup recently. Bright yellow blazes frequently visible. Signage was missing paint, but all legible and in place. The trails had a dusting of snow, saw lots of footprints from woodland creatures: deer, moose, bear, birds of various sizes, tiny paws of perhaps squirrels, cat of some sort - larger than a housecat but not huge, raccoon, etc.

Wore gaiters, although I could have been okay without them. Brought MicroSpikes, but did not use them. I use poles, would have been a rough day without them. All in all, a pleasant ramble in the woods. Clear views all the way to the Presidentials. I went very early, on the trail before light. I met about a dozen people on the way down, so a little busier than I expected.

Will post more on my blog with photos later, http://losingfifty.wordpress.com.
