Date of Hike: 4-12-2009
Trail Conditions: Several hopable water crossings in the hardwoods and before the main ascent. Some icy snow patches and muddy sections in the first 2 mi; then gradually progressing to full snow cover. Very deep still along the last mile to the summit, trail signs were nearly covered. Numerous blowdowns throughout; although none are impassable. Thick ice in the trees towards the summit. Icy cover on the trail was common.
Special Equipment Required: Traction- Yaktrax or Microspikes useful. Crampons would be helpful but not necessary. Snowshoes- not necessary as snow was hardened from the cold, although we did posthole a bit later in the day. Poles are essential.
Comments: The whole trial is bare boot-able, but some traction makes life easier. Use poles. Water crossings were easy. Very icy along the last 0.6 miles; the wind was strong and sharp. Snowshoes weren't necessary, but if things soften up a bit they will be. Some sign of moose and recent bear scrapes.
