I did a nice hike in Acadia today up Sargent mt and then over Gilmore peak, Parkman Mt, and Bald Peak. Started the hike off rte 198, north of Upper Hadlock Pond, ascended Hadlock Brook trail, which followed the brook for about a mile or so, which was very nice. It also went right by one of the carriage road bridges, which if you haven't been to the park, they are very nice and large. I have a few pictures of the bridge and the waterfall behind it, in the link below. There are quite a few bridges throughout the park, which make the bike rides nice. The ascent was pretty steady uphill, the peak is only at 1373 feet, but it does give your lungs a good burn like most of the hikes on the island. The views on the top are 360 degrees, and the only nicer views on the island is probably from cadillac mt. Sargent is the 2nd highest on the island. The weather was gorgeous, and it must have been almost 70 degrees at the top of the mt., and not a cloud in the sky. After the top, I went down the Grandgent Trail, which went over the three other peaks with about 100 to 200 foot ascents and descents between the peaks. The total hike was probably a little over 5 miles. The other two pics are from Sargent looking at the Bubbles at the end of Jordan Pond, Pemetic Mt, and the farthest peak is Cadillac. You can see the edge of Eagle Lake in one of the shots looking at Cadillac. One other option for hiking Sargeant is the Giant Slide trail off of rte 198, which is a very nice hike up a little rockslide and valley.

Welcome to VFTT!
Nice report and pictures. Sargent (and all of Acadia for that matter) have always been a favorite. I am very jealous that you live so close to it!! I have not been there since the day before 9/11/01. Sargent has great views and I actually prefer it to Cadillac...the tourist road on the top of a mountain always bums me out!

I live about an hour and a half from the park,so it's a nice day trip. I hiked acadia/st. sauveur last week and that has nice views of somes sound w/out too much vertical. The auto road up cadillac doesn't bother me too much, it is nice to drive up and see the sunset/sunrise. The only auto road that perturbs me is the mt washington auto road. After hiking 2 and a half hours up, i don't like seeing larger people wearing hawaiin t-shirts while smoking a cigarette and looking for the gift shop. I hiked it last summer and when i got to the top, there was a couple who had ridden a motorcycle up, and the woman was scared to death to ride down. She was yelling at her husband that she was going to walk down the mountain before she road back down on the bike. Her husband yelled,"you're friggin crazy, noone can walk down this mountain". He must not have seen me with backpack? Oh well. I might go do tuckerman's sometime this week. if anyone reads this and has any info on tuck's and how good the skiing is, let me know.

Tut, are all of the carriage paths open yet? We like to head over there in May and bike and hike, but I recall one year when some of the paths were closed due to being too wet. Is that the case this year at all?

all the carriage paths should be open right now, there has been a lot of rain this spring but the carriage paths are made of a crushed rock on top of the normal ground, so there normally isn't any standing water on the trails even if it has rained a lot. the couple of carriage paths i crossed yesterday looked to be in great shape. the park website is at
http://www.nps.gov/acad/home.htm

that lists all the trail and road info there. pretty much everything is open, except for a few hiking trails like the precipice and jordan cliffs due to the peregrine falcons nesting.
