well, it was actually the 2nd, but close.
Yup, Joanna and I went back for another hike of the Traveler. I had been turned around twice before, once with Papa Bear and Rambler b/c of wet/cold weather and inadequate clothes and once last weekend with Joanna b/c of sickness.
So, we were canoe-camped at our usual July spot on Scraggly Lake. Saturday morning saw a late start and by the time we had paddled back across the lake to the truck, it was already 9 am. We got to South Branch at 10 (Sherp and Gris, your favorite ranger was working the gate again) and suited up.
To make a long story short, it was a spectacular day with a consisent cool breeze and crystal clear skies. It was going to be worth the wait. We took many more pics on Peak of the Ridges (my 3rd such set of photos without actually getting to the Traveler).
The trip over to the Traveler was awesome and I couldn't help but eye the slides for a winter ski trip. I took plenty of pictures for future reference
So, we made the Traveler summit and hung out for a bit, enjoying the views and bug-free sky that had shrouded the summits so much the weekend before. I was quite disappointed to see the Traveler sign is made of plastic encased in a wood frame. Come one, BSP, you can do better than that!
The trip over to N. Traveler took longer than we expected, but it was a very enjoyable stretch with a nice stint back on the ridgeline with more stellar views. Eventually we reached the familair territory on top of N. Traveler and made our way back down to S. Branch via the spine, dreaming of hangliders and pina coladas.
We picked up my flip-flops from Sue at Matagamon, where I had left them the week before (I had called her and asked her to hold on to them for me) and headed back to Scraggly. Paddling back across the lake to our campsite, I thought of what we could do on Sunday. I suggested we head up to Peaked Mtn, The County county highpoint. Being Joanna's birthday, I didn't get my hopes up and sure enough, she squashed my bushwhacking hopes with her perennial excuse of memories of an unfortunate finger-breaking trip up the Moosilauke headwall a couple of years ago. She'll never let me forget that trip! and besides, this small part of the state actually suffers from a lack of north-south roads, meaning you just can't get there from here. and so, we enjoyed our no-bake Oreo pie and the friendly loons that have often laughed us to sleep on Scraggly...
A trip well deserved and weather to make the memories go the distance. At least until I head back this winter
I'll likely get some pics up tomorrow.
