The trails and herdpaths are in excellent shape, a little muddy but what do you expect? It was great not to see any of the ugly orange surveyor tape flagging that littered the paths to Seymour and Seward last summer.
I didn't see even one black fly on this cool day (temps in the mid-40s to mid-50s F) but the mosquitoes swarmed at Ward Brook Lean-to if you stood in one place. Plenty of good water running for refilling, even high on Seward.
I would argue the 2.5 mile, 2400 ft ascent, path to Seward from Ward Brook is the most rugged single ascent in the Adirondacks. Add to that the 2000 ft ascent to Seymour and the walk to Donaldson and Emmons, and you've got a pretty good day hike!
