Shortcut between Rt. 16 and Bangor Street

A few years ago peakbagger posted a note here on a shortcut between Rt. 16 and Bangor Street, which could substantially shorten the road walk between the Stony Brook and Carter-Moriah trailheads for those doing the loop with only one car.

I did not read it carefully, but stored away in my mind the fact that such a shortcut existed.

Last Sunday I was hiking Mt. Moriah by the Carter-Moriah Trail alone, so I had some time to explore the area. It is obvious that such a shortcut must cross the Peabody River, so as I drove to the trailhead I looked west for signs of a bridge. Shortly before the trailhead I saw a suspension bridge, so after parking at the trailhead I crossed it and found the route to Rt. 16.

See Shortcut Between Stony Brook and Carter-Moriah Trailheads for a description plus map of the route.

A minor revision to your instructions is that it is Bangor Street not Bangor Road.

The name of the pedestrian bridge is the "huggermugger" bridge

Thanks for remembering my post of many years ago

So if I wanted to bike this, it's all road except the bridge, where I'd walk the bike?

peakbagger,

Thanks for the original posting and for reminding me that it is Bangor Street. I have edited the post to reflect that.

The maps say that Mill Street becomes Store Street after the junction with Libby Street. I was not thinking of writing a description at the time I explored the area, so I was not looking at signs carefully, but I do not recall seeing a Store Street sign.

Is there a sign on the bridge, or is it just a local name?

I had relatives that used to live on that street. I have taken that bridge as well.
