Trail: Skookumchuck

Condition: Packed for about a mile, then trail-breaking required thereafter. Now reasonably packed up to about 4,000 feet elevation, approximately 3-3.5 miles in.

Special equipment: Snowshoes a must. I used powder tails on my MSRs the entire way and was very glad I did.

Comments: The first 1.0-1.25 mile had been packed by a couple of young guys who snow-camped Friday night near Skookumchuck Brook. After the spur to their camp the route required trail breaking, and the higher we went the deeper the snow got. Beginning around the 3,200-foot elevation we lost the trail in the trees, found it, lost it, found it. At about 4,000 feet we lost it for good. By this time we were really struggling in the deep snow and thick forest -- every snowshoe step sank in the deep, heavy snow a couple of feet, and we were continually bombed with big snowloads from branches. After clambering over several very deep, difficult drifts, we finally gave in to our exhaustion and headed back down. I'll return to this trail, one of my favorites in the Whites, later in the winter when the snow is firmer and the trail a little easier to find.
